Introductory & Intermediate Programs:
- Level 1 (150 hours)
Creates a solid foundation for all other techniques. Includes body mechanics, draping, professionalism, European strokes, introduction to human anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, indications and contra-indications for massage, you will learn an ecletic theraputic full-body massage taught by Dr. Jo Maynard Ph.D. this routine has been given internationally.
Offered every January (Winter) and September (Fall). Spring/Summer Intensives also scheduled.
- Level 2 (420 hours)
Provides a deeper understanding of soft tissue manipulations for students with a minimum of 150 hours prior training. Explores Spa and Aromatherapy techniques, Hawaiian Lomilomi, client assessment, sports massage, musculo-skeletal injuries, hygiene, body-mind relationships, deep tissue massage, ethics, reflexology and more. Advanced classes include Oriental modalities, pathology for bodyworkers, fascial release techniques, medical massage, clinical anatomy, and Hawaiian healing arts.
- Internship (6-12 months)
The Internship/student clinic provides practical experience in a clinical setting, and is required for Hawaii licensure. Weekly classes reinforce academics in a supportive environment, and the students master techniques for wellness as well as injury care. In the clinic students learn to care for special populations: athletes, the elderly, disabled, community groups, and the general population. Taken concurrently with (not separately from) Level 2.

NOTE: The Big Island Academy of Massage is approved by the State Department of Education and an ABMP/ AMTA school member in excellent stading.The current state requirements are 570 hours prior to taking the licensing exam. You can call the Dept.of Commerce and Coomunity Affairs at (808) 586-3000, if you have questions regarding requirements. The Big Island Academy`s current and new requirements will satisfy the academics to be eligible for examination with the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB). Check your area for up-to-date licensing laws.
Advanced programs:
- Continuing Education Once a foundation (Level 1 minimum) has been completed, or once a therapist is licensed, cont. ed. provides an exciting way to learn more about topics of special interest and earn Cat. A CEUs. Workshps are also available for people who are just interested in massage.Check our upcoming Cont. Ed Classes or contact us to be on our mailing list. It is a great way to include your vacation with your continuing education.
