The Big Island Academy is the only Vocational Trade school for Massage in East Hawaii

Level 1 Academic Phase (150 hours):
Subjects: Principles & Practice of Classical Massage Therapy and Introduction to Human Anatomy, Physiology, Kinesiology (Level 1 Pre-Clinical)
Goals:To learn basic concepts of the human body, particularly relating to health, movement, palpation and soft tissue therapies. Includes a therapeutic, full-body massage routine. Learn when, why and how massage helps, as well as when it is not indicated. Explore body mechanics, the power of healing touch, aromatherapy, reflexology, palpation and assessment skills. On-line anatomy and ethics course available.

Level I: Introductory Swedish and European classical Massage (100 hrs), including Russian thechniques $2,185.00 (not including tax and supplies)

  • Winter: Jan. 5, Feb. 18, 2010 (Mon/Wed/Fri, 10-4)
  • Spring Intensive: May 4 – June 15, 2010 (Mon/Wed/Thu/Fri, 10-4). 5 weeks. $2,285.00
  • Fall: Sept. 14 – Oct. 30, 2010 (Mon/Wed/Fri, 10-4)
    Fall course includes Sports Massage course, and participation in the Kona Ironman Triathlon massage team in October!

Level I: Anatomy, Physiology & Kinesiology (50 hrs) $550

  • Winter: Feb. 20 – March 13, 2010 (Mon/Wed/Fri, 10-4).
  • Spring Intensive: July 6 – July 27, 2010. Three-weeks Intensive (Mon/Wed/Thu/Fri, 10-4) $600
  • Fall: Oct. 22– Nov. 14, 2010 (Mon/Wed/Fri, 10-4).

TOTAL: Level I -$2,735. 00 plus state tax and supplies. $100. off for early registration & full payment.
Level 1 prepares students for Continuing Educational levels or student internship Program.

Levels 2 and Internship Training (min. 420 hours):
Upon completion of Level I program or equivalent from another school, the student may continue with the Internship Program at the Big Island Academy of Massage, where advanced techniques are taught in a safe and nurturing enviroment, the student obtains valuable clinical training by experiencing the workings of an ongoing clinic setting, under the direct supervison of qualified staff.
Subjects: Aromatherapy, Myomuscular, Sports Massage, Deep Tissue, Pre-Natal, Reiki, Russian Massage, Hot and Cold Stone therapy and Spa treatments, Hawaiian Lomilomi, Kinesiology, Professionalism and Business Matter, to name a few. Workshops are available throughout the year.

Level II tuition is $2,718. (not included are workshop fees, insurance, CPR and supplies. Payment plans available, distributed over 5 months.) Students participate in community events. Prepares students for State and National Exams.

Payment plans: Students may pay monthly after a $500 down payment is made. Long-term student loans are available though our affiliate TFC Credit Corp or Bank loans. Local loans may be obtained through Alulike, State Rehabilitaion program, County work incentive program, the GI Bill and other organizations. If tuition is paid in full at the time of registration a $100.00 discount will be given.

The Big Island Academy of Massage is approved by the Department of Education,and is the only Vocational Trade School in East Hawaii for massage. Books and supplies may be purchased through the school. We are an AMTAand ABMP school member, in good standing and have student job placement.

To be considered for our program you must:

  1. Apply with a $50.00 non-refundable registration fee.
  2. Attend an Interview with the Director. (This can be done over the phone if you are coming from off island).
  3. Be at least 17 years of age. Have a social security number.
  4. Make financial arrangements and sign a student contract.

NOTE: Our program is based on a first come basis (for those that qualify), class fill up quickly so early registration is advised. No one will be considered registered until they have met all of the above requirements.

Pre-licensing requirements: With the onset of pending changes in the state Board of Massage rules, all students must be finished with Level I and Level II programs before the new changes are made. After this time, students will need to meet the new standards. Fees will go up accordingly. For details on Hawaii requirements, call (808) 586-3000.
